Pearls are produced by living organisms. Its still a gem, just an organic one. Whether happening naturally or with human intervention, the formation starts when a foreign object irritates the soft tissue of the mollusk shell. The mollusk, fighting to protect itself, then coats the object with nacre layer after layer. And in time, a pearl is formed.
